Famous Data Visualization Use Cases – The SWOT Analysis

SWOT analytics is a popular example of how abstract data concepts can be translated into tangible elements.

A SWOT analysis identifies the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Not that many people know that its creator, Albert Humphrey, originally called the SWOT analysis technique SOFT. Mr. Humphrey used data from some of his age's largest companies during the 1960s and 1970s to understand the factors that caused a business plan to fail. He has classified the data into four categories in his project:

“What is good in the present is Satisfactory, good in the future is an Opportunity; bad in the present is a Fault and bad in the future is a Threat.”

However, during a conference in 1964, Urick and Orr turned the F into a W (Faults became weaknesses), changing SOFT into SWOT forever. Visually, a SWOT analysis is presented as a 2D or 3D square divided into four principal areas.

The visual representation of a SWOT analysis provides a series of key insights into a company's potential threats for growth, profit, and prosperity. It is used together with the Strengths vs. Weaknesses sections to imagine the factors affecting the current balance of organization.
